The couple walked along the beach near night and ignored the ghost completely. It was easy to look through its veils and chains and see only the sunset and how it painted the far-off waves. This was because the ghost was an ancient spirit—pre-industrial certainly, perhaps even pre-agricultural—and now struggled to manifest. It had haunted the shoreline here for centuries, maybe even longer.
